Discover more about Belle Mont Mansion

Belle Mont Mansion, constructed between 1828 and 1832, is a stunning example of Palladian architecture located near Tuscumbia, Alabama. The mansion was originally built for Dr. Alexander Williams Mitchell, a physician and planter from Virginia. The design is believed to have been influenced by Thomas Jefferson's architectural style, making it a unique historical landmark in the region. Dr. Mitchell, one of the area's first large-scale planters and slaveholders, sold the 1,680-acre plantation to Isaac Winston in 1833. The Winston family owned and occupied Belle Mont until around 1940 and formally donated the house and 33 surrounding acres to the Alabama Historical Commission in 1983. The mansion features a two-story central section with flanking one-story wings, constructed with red brick. The side wings project towards the rear, creating a semi-enclosed courtyard. Inside, visitors can admire period antiques and learn about the lives of those who lived and worked on the plantation. Belle Mont hosts various events throughout the year, including a quilt show in October and a Christmas open house in December. Today, Belle Mont Mansion operates as a historic house museum, offering guided tours that provide insights into its rich history and architectural significance. It is owned by the Alabama Historical Commission and operated by the Colbert County Historical Landmarks Foundation.
