Frank Lloyd Wright's Rosenbaum House Museum

The Rosenbaum House, located in Florence, Alabama, stands as a testament to Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian ideals and is a significant landmark in American residential architecture. Designed and built in 1939 for Stanley and Mildred Rosenbaum, it's the only structure in Alabama designed by Wright and one of the purest examples of his Usonian home concept. The house embodies Wright's vision of creating affordable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing homes for middle-class American families during the Depression era. The Rosenbaums, a young couple, commissioned Wright to design their home with a budget of $7,500, a wedding gift from Stanley's parents. Wright accepted the commission and designed the house remotely. The house was completed in 1940 and quickly gained recognition. The house is characterized by its L-shaped design, flat roofs, cantilevered eaves, and the extensive use of natural materials such as cypress wood, brick, and glass. These elements seamlessly blend the structure with its surroundings, embodying Wright's concept of organic architecture. The open floor plan and large windows create a sense of spaciousness and allow natural light to flood the interior, further enhancing the connection between the indoors and outdoors. Wright's Usonian design principles are evident throughout the house. He eliminated the basement and attic, opting for hidden storage spaces to maximize functionality. The heating system was embedded within the concrete floor, providing radiant heat. The furniture and lighting were also designed by Wright, ensuring a cohesive and harmonious aesthetic throughout the home. As the Rosenbaum family grew, they commissioned Wright to design an addition in 1948. The Rosenbaums remained the sole owners and occupants of the house until 1999, when they donated it to the City of Florence. The city meticulously restored the house and opened it as a public museum in 2002. Today, the Rosenbaum House is an international tourist destination and the only Usonian structure in the Southeast open to the public.
