The Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts, a cornerstone of Florence's cultural landscape, is located at 217 E. Tuscaloosa Street, right in the heart of downtown. The center is comprised of three historic buildings: the Kennedy-Douglass Center, the Kennedy-Douglass Annex, and the Southall-Moore House. This creates a unique campus dedicated to the arts. The main gallery, a gift shop, the Hiram Kennedy Douglass mini-museum, and the offices for Florence Arts and Museum and the KD Volunteers are all located in the Kennedy-Douglass Center. The Kennedy-Douglass Annex houses three art galleries. The Southall-Moore House is used for organizational meetings, concerts, programs, and workshops. Founded in 1976, the Kennedy-Douglass Art Center hosts annual and rotating art exhibits, workshops, and classes for all ages. Each May, the KD Volunteers host Arts Alive, a two-day art festival that supports art education. The center also serves as the administrative office for the City of Florence Arts & Museums (FAM). The Kennedy-Douglass Arts Volunteers, a non-profit organization, have been fostering public appreciation of the arts in the Shoals area since 1978. The center is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm, and Sunday from 1 pm to 4 pm, with free admission.
