Discover more about Old Cahawba Archaeological Park

Old Cahawba Archaeological Park invites visitors to step back in time and explore the remains of Alabama's first permanent capital, which served as the state capital from 1820 to 1825. Situated at the confluence of the Alabama and Cahaba Rivers near present-day Orrville, the town of Cahawba was intended to be a symbol of the new state's promise. However, its low elevation made it prone to flooding, and the capital was moved to Tuscaloosa in 1826. Despite losing its status as the capital, Cahawba thrived as a cotton distribution hub, experiencing a boom in the 1840s and 1850s. The Civil War brought significant changes, with the town serving as a Confederate prison, Castle Morgan, for captured Union soldiers. Following the war, a devastating flood in 1865 and the relocation of the county seat led to Cahawba's rapid decline. By 1900, it was largely abandoned, earning the title of Alabama's most famous ghost town. Today, the Old Cahawba Archaeological Park preserves the remnants of this historic town. Visitors can explore the landscape of ruins, relics, and gravestones, and walk along the abandoned streets. Notable features include the Crocheron Columns, the site of Castle Morgan, and the historic cemeteries. The park also offers opportunities for birdwatching, hiking, and picnicking. The Visitor Center features exhibits of artifacts and photographs that illustrate Cahawba's history.
