Discover more about The English man's Clocktower

The English Man's Clocktower, known locally as Sahati i Inglizit, stands as a unique landmark in Shkodër, Albania. Constructed in the late 19th century, the tower and its adjacent mansion were financed by Lord Alfred Paget, an English nobleman with a mission to promote Protestantism in the region. The tower is the only structure in Shkodër that resembles a medieval-style castle or château. Lord Paget envisioned the tower as a bell tower for religious services, intending to establish an Anglican church in the city. However, his efforts faced opposition, and instead of bells, a large clock with three faces was installed. The clock's chimes became a prominent part of daily life in Shkodër. The tower's architecture is notable for its octagonal layout, a departure from most clock towers in Albania. It stands 16.35 meters tall, with walls constructed of carefully sculpted stones. Inside, stone steps lead to the top, with five platforms built within. Over the years, the building has served various purposes, including a museum during the communist era. The clocks were removed and transferred to the Fortress of Gjirokastër during communist rule. Today, the English Man's Clocktower remains a striking piece of architecture, blending functionality with aesthetic ambition. It is a testament to Shkodër's cultural and historical past and was restored in 2024.
