The Church of the 40 Saints, or what remains of it, sits atop a prominent hill overlooking the city of Sarandë, Albania. This ancient basilica, believed to have been constructed in the 6th century AD during the reign of Emperor Justinian, holds immense historical and cultural significance. The church's name, "Agioi Saranta" in Greek, meaning "Forty Saints," is believed to be the origin of the city's name, Sarandë. Dedicated to the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste, Roman soldiers who refused to renounce their Christian faith in 320 AD and were martyred for it, the church served as a major pilgrimage destination for Christians in the Balkans and Adriatic coasts. The structure itself was grand, featuring a heptaconch design (seven conches) and intricate architectural details. It included a nave, narthexes, and possibly an exterior narthex, along with crypts and chapels beneath. Over the centuries, the church underwent several expansions and modifications to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims. However, it was largely destroyed during World War II by British artillery in 1944 and further damaged by the construction of a military base during the communist era. Today, only ruins remain, offering visitors a glimpse into the past and panoramic views of the Ionian Sea. Despite its ruined state, the site continues to attract tourists and locals alike, drawn by its historical importance and stunning location.
