History of Fieri

Apollonia, located near modern-day Fieri, was founded in 588 BC by Greek colonists from Corfu and Corinth. It became one of the most important cities in the region due to its strategic location along the Via Egnatia, an ancient Roman road. Apollonia was a thriving center of commerce, philosophy, and the arts. Aristotle mentions the city in his writings, and it was also a place where Octavian (later Emperor Augustus) studied before his rise to power.
Under Roman rule, Apollonia flourished as a significant cultural and economic hub. The city boasted impressive architecture, including a grand theatre, a library, and several temples. However, earthquakes and changing trade routes eventually led to its decline. By the 4th century AD, Apollonia had lost much of its former glory and was largely abandoned.
The medieval period saw the rise of Fieri (Fier), which developed as a key agricultural and trade center. The region was under the control of various powers, including the Byzantine Empire, the Bulgarians, and later the Ottomans. The establishment of the Monastery of Ardenica in the 13th century was a significant event, as it became a spiritual and cultural focal point for the region.
