Byllis Archaeological Park: Echoes of Illyrian Grandeur

Byllis Archaeological Park invites visitors to step back in time and explore the impressive ruins of an ancient city that dominated Southern Illyria. Founded in the 4th century BC, Byllis flourished through the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods, leaving behind a rich tapestry of architectural and cultural treasures. Strategically positioned on a steep hill overlooking the Vjosa River valley, the city commanded breathtaking panoramic views. The massive 2.2 km long city walls, parts of which are still visible today, once enclosed 30 hectares, protecting its inhabitants and showcasing its power. Within these walls, visitors can discover the remains of a grand theater that once seated up to 7,500 spectators, offering a glimpse into the city's vibrant cultural life. Explore the remnants of the stadium, the agora (main square), and residential areas, imagining life in this bustling ancient center. During the Roman era, Byllis became a colony under Augustus, further enriching its architectural landscape with baths, an altar to Augustus, and Roman-style houses. Later, in the 5th century AD, it became an important religious center with several early Christian basilicas constructed, adorned with intricate mosaics. Abandoned after a Slavic invasion in 586 AD, Byllis remains a captivating site where history and natural beauty converge.
