Discover more about Fagatele Marine Sanctuary

Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary is a hidden gem in American Samoa, offering a unique and vibrant underwater world teeming with marine life and stunning coral formations. Located on the southwestern coast of Tutuila Island, the bay is a naturally protected area formed by a collapsed volcanic crater, surrounded by steep, forested cliffs. Established in 1986, the sanctuary protects a pristine coral reef ecosystem that represents an outstanding example of an Indo-Pacific coral reef. The bay is home to hundreds of species of fish, corals, and other reef denizens. Visitors can explore the underwater world through snorkeling and diving, discovering a kaleidoscope of colors beneath the surface. The sanctuary's diverse marine life includes sea turtles, reef sharks, and, from June to September, migrating humpback whales. The sanctuary also plays a vital role in conservation and research. It maintains one of the longest coral reef monitoring datasets in the world, helping to gauge long-term patterns of change and recovery from events that have disrupted the ecosystem in the past. The sanctuary works closely with the local community to increase public awareness of issues affecting American Samoa's coral reefs. While the sanctuary is primarily known for its underwater wonders, it also offers opportunities for bird watching and exploring the lush tropical landscapes. The Fagatele Bay Trail, a short but steep hike, provides stunning views of the bay and surrounding scenery.
