Nestled in the Andorran village of Meritxell, the Església romànica Santa Maria de Meritxell carries a profound historical and spiritual significance. This church, initially constructed in the Romanesque style during the 12th century, underwent a Baroque reconstruction in the 17th century, completed around 1658. Throughout its history, it saw several improvements and expansions, serving as a sanctuary for the Virgin of Meritxell. Tragedy struck on the night of September 8, 1972, when a devastating fire consumed the church, leaving only ruins. The blaze destroyed invaluable original documents, images, and altarpieces, including the revered Romanesque figure of the Virgin Mary. In 1994, the remains were restored, transforming the chapel into the 'Meritxell Memòria' exhibition space. Today, visitors can explore the restored building, a rectangular structure with a square apse, a gabled roof, a bell gable, and a portico on the south wall. The exhibition offers a journey through the cult and history of Our Lady of Meritxell, the patron saint of Andorra. The site stands as a testament to the Andorran people's devotion and their efforts to preserve their cultural heritage. The church, along with the adjacent new Sanctuary of Meritxell, forms a historic complex of cultural interest, symbolizing the continuity and renewal of Christian faith in Andorra.
