Discover more about Sanctuary Basilica of Our Lady of Meritxell

The Sanctuary Basilica of Our Lady of Meritxell, located in the serene town of Meritxell in the parish of Canillo, is more than just a religious building; it's a cultural and spiritual landmark for Andorra. The basilica is dedicated to the Virgin of Meritxell, the patron saint of Andorra, and is a significant pilgrimage site. The original Romanesque chapel, which housed a 12th-century statue of the Virgin Mary, was destroyed by a fire in 1972. The fire not only consumed the original statue but also much of the country's historical documents and artifacts. In 1976, the new sanctuary was built by the Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill, who created a design that blends modern and medieval styles. Bofill aimed to harmonize the structure with the surrounding Pyrenean landscape, incorporating slate and white stone to symbolize the Andorran tradition and winter snow. The basilica features a mixture of architectural styles, including Romanesque and Catalan-Mudéjar influences, with a bell tower and cloister reminiscent of Catalan Romanesque imagery. The interior is austere, drawing attention to the stained-glass windows and the replica of the Virgin. The site includes the old sanctuary, now transformed into the Meritxell Memoria exhibition hall, which showcases the history and significance of Meritxell. The basilica was granted the title of Minor Basilica by Pope Francis in 2014 and is part of the Marian Route, connecting it to other significant sanctuaries in France and Spain. The Sanctuary is open daily, and visitors can explore the grounds, including a nature route leading to the Meritxell Oratories and the village of Prats.
