Discover more about Château de Montségur

Château de Montségur, rising 1,207 meters above the Pays d'Olmes, is more than just a ruined castle; it's a symbol of Cathar resistance and a place steeped in history and legend. Originally built in 1206 on the foundations of an earlier structure, Montségur became a refuge for the Cathars, a religious group deemed heretical by the Catholic Church. By 1232, it had become the headquarters of the Cathar Church. The castle's strategic location and strong fortifications made it a formidable stronghold during the Albigensian Crusade. In 1244, after a grueling ten-month siege, Montségur fell to the Crusader army. Rather than renounce their faith, over 200 Cathar 'parfaits' and 'parfaites' were burned at the stake at the foot of the mountain. This tragic event marked the end of Montségur as a major center of Catharism. Today, visitors can explore the castle ruins, which include the remains of the keep, walls, and living quarters. The site offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding Pyrenees mountains and the valley below. A small museum in the nearby village of Montségur displays archaeological finds from the site and provides further information about the castle's history and the Cathar faith.
