Sant Joan de Caselles Church: A Romanesque Jewel

The Church of Sant Joan de Caselles, located near Canillo, Andorra, is a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries. Its construction reflects the typical design of Andorran Romanesque churches, featuring a rectangular nave with a wooden roof, a semi-circular apse, and a Lombard-style bell tower. Two porches, likely added in the 16th and 17th centuries, adorn the structure. Inside, visitors can discover the remains of a 12th-century stucco Romanesque Majesty, surrounded by a mural depicting the crucifixion with Longinus and Stephanus, accompanied by the sun and moon. A 16th-century altarpiece, influenced by the Italian and Germanic Renaissance, sits behind the rood screen, depicting scenes from the life and martyrdom of Saint John, the author of the Apocalypse and patron saint of the church. The church's bell tower, standing at 24 meters, is an iconic feature. Located on the road to France, the church is easily accessible and offers a glimpse into Andorra's cultural roots.
