Discover more about Château de Montségur

Château de Montségur, or Montségur Castle, is more than just a ruined fortress; it's a powerful reminder of a tumultuous period in European history. Located in the Ariège department of southern France, the castle's origins trace back to the early 13th century when it was rebuilt as a Cathar stronghold. The name Montségur, derived from the Occitan language, means 'safe mountain,' an apt description for this imposing structure. In 1244, after a prolonged siege, Montségur fell to the Crusaders, marking the tragic end of Cathar resistance. Approximately 200 Cathars who refused to renounce their faith were burned at the stake, an event that solidified Montségur's place in history as a symbol of religious persecution. The current ruins, while not from the original Cathar structure, still evoke the spirit of this bygone era. Visitors to Montségur can explore the castle ruins, wander through the stone remains, and imagine life within its walls. The site offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Pyrenees, rewarding those who make the climb. The nearby Montségur Museum houses archaeological finds from the site, providing further insight into the castle's history and the lives of the Cathars. Exploring the castle requires a 30-minute walk along a steep path.
