The Creu dels Set Braços, or Cross of the Seven Arms, is a notable sculpture found in Canillo, Andorra. This artistic landmark, a stone cross in the Gothic style, dates back to 1477. It stands on the historic route connecting Canillo and Meritxell. The cross is thought to have originally marked the boundary between Prats and Canillo. The cross features a depiction of Jesus Christ on one side and the Virgin Mary on the other. The name comes from the seven arms that once adorned the cross, though it now has only six. According to local legend, the cross commemorates a tragic event involving a group of young men from Prats. The tale tells of a prank gone wrong, leading to the death of one of the youths and the subsequent loss of one of the cross's arms. Photographic evidence confirms that the cross had all seven arms as late as 1916. In 1990, the cross underwent restoration by Andorra's National Artistic Heritage. During this process, the original cross was moved to the Comú (local government) for preservation, and a replica was placed at the original site. Today, the Creu dels Set Braços is more than just a sculpture; it's a symbol of Andorran identity and a reminder of the stories and traditions that have shaped the country.
