Discover more about Château de Montségur

Château de Montségur, located in the Ariège department of southern France, is a historic site with a rich and complex past. The castle, rebuilt in 1206 and modified in the late 13th century, is perched atop a mountain at an altitude of 1,207 meters. The name Montségur, derived from the Occitan language, means "safe hill". Originally settled in the Neolithic era and later occupied by the Romans, Montségur gained prominence in the Middle Ages as a stronghold for the Cathars, a religious group deemed heretical by the Catholic Church. In the 13th century, the castle became a center of Cathar activity, providing refuge for religious figures and those fleeing persecution. This led to a brutal siege by French royal forces in 1243, lasting nearly ten months. In March 1244, the Cathar defenders surrendered, and over 200 Cathars were burned at the stake for refusing to renounce their faith. This tragic event marked the end of Catharism in the region and solidified Montségur's place in history as a symbol of religious resistance. Today, Château de Montségur is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its historical significance and stunning location. The ruins of the castle offer a glimpse into its medieval past, while the panoramic views of the surrounding Pyrenees mountains are breathtaking. A museum in the nearby village of Montségur displays archaeological objects and provides context for the castle's history.
