Discover more about Château de Montségur

Château de Montségur, located in the Ariège department of southern France, is a site of immense historical and cultural significance. The castle's origins trace back to the Stone Age, with evidence of Roman occupation also found in the area. The name Montségur, derived from the Occitan language, means 'safe hill'. In the 13th century, the castle was rebuilt and became a center for Cathar activities, housing Guilhabert de Castres, a Cathar bishop. The Cathars, considered heretics by the Catholic Church, sought refuge within its walls. In 1244, after a long siege, the castle fell, and those Cathars who refused to renounce their faith were burned en masse at the foot of the mountain. Today, the ruins of Montségur stand as a monument to their courage and conviction. The existing fortress, while often called a 'Cathar castle,' was actually rebuilt later. The climb to the castle takes around 30 minutes via a steep, rocky path, rewarding visitors with breathtaking panoramic views.
