Sanctuary Basilica of Our Lady of Meritxell: Andorra's Spiritual Heart
Discover Andorra's spiritual heart at the Sanctuary Basilica of Our Lady of Meritxell, a blend of faith, art, and stunning Pyrenean scenery.
The Sanctuary Basilica of Our Lady of Meritxell, located in the parish of Canillo, is more than just a religious site; it's a symbol of Andorran identity and a testament to the country's faith. The basilica is dedicated to the Virgin of Meritxell, the patron saint of Andorra, whose story is woven into the nation's history. According to legend, a shepherd discovered an image of the Virgin Mary in a winter-blooming rosebush, a miraculous event that led to the construction of the first chapel. The original Romanesque chapel was destroyed by fire in 1972, a tragedy that also claimed the original statue of the Virgin. This event deeply affected the Andorran people and led to a rebirth of faith and a new sanctuary. Renowned Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill was commissioned to design the new basilica, completed in 1976. Bofill's design is an eclectic mix of styles, blending modern and medieval elements with Romanesque and Gothic influences. The basilica incorporates slate, a traditional Andorran material, and luminous white, symbolizing snow, harmonizing with the surrounding Pyrenean landscape. Inside, visitors can venerate a replica of the original Romanesque carving of the Virgin. The basilica also houses statues of the patron saints of the other Andorran parishes. The former sanctuary has been transformed into Meritxell Memoria, an exhibition hall showcasing the history and cult of Meritxell. In 2014, Pope Francis declared the Sanctuary a Minor Basilica, recognizing its religious significance. The Sanctuary is part of the Marian Route, connecting it to other important Marian shrines in Spain and France. The site offers guided tours and a nature route leading to the Meritxell Oratories and the village of Prats. The basilica is open daily, with varying hours depending on the day of the week.
