Discover more about Sanctuary Basilica of Our Lady of Meritxell

The Sanctuary Basilica of Our Lady of Meritxell, located in the parish of Canillo, stands as Andorra's most important religious site and a testament to the nation's devotion to its patron saint. The basilica's history is rooted in a 12th-century legend, where a shepherd found an image of the Virgin Mary under a winter-blooming rosebush. This led to the construction of a chapel, which over centuries, evolved into a sanctuary. In 1972, tragedy struck when a fire destroyed the sanctuary, including the original Romanesque carving of the Virgin. This event spurred a reconstruction, entrusting the project to Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill. Bofill's vision resulted in a unique architectural blend, merging modern design with Romanesque elements. The new basilica, completed in 1976, incorporates slate to connect with the natural surroundings and luminous white to symbolize snow, a common sight in the Andorran landscape. The basilica features an open cloister with uncovered archways and a miracle room. Inside, a replica of the Romanesque Virgin is venerated, and statues of Andorran saints, sculpted by Sergi Mas, are displayed. In 2014, Pope Francis declared the Sanctuary a Minor Basilica, further solidifying its religious importance. It also became part of the Marian Route, linking it to other significant sanctuaries in Spain and France. Visitors can explore the Meritxell Memoria, an exhibition hall in the former sanctuary, detailing the history and significance of Meritxell. The basilica offers guided tours and a nature route leading to the Meritxell Oratories and the village of Prats. The site is accessible by car and the Andorran Tourist Bus. The Sanctuary of Meritxell is more than a religious site; it's a cultural landmark that embodies Andorran identity and history.
