National Slavery Museum: A Somber Reflection

The National Slavery Museum (Museu Nacional da Escravatura) is located in Belas, near Luanda, and stands as a solemn reminder of Angola's significant role in the transatlantic slave trade. Established in 1977 by the National Institute of Cultural Heritage, the museum is housed in the Casa Grande Chapel, a 17th-century building where enslaved people were baptized before being forced onto ships bound for the Americas.The museum's location itself carries historical weight, situated on the former estate of Álvaro de Carvalho Matoso, a notorious slave trader. Matoso was captain of several presidios and became one of the most significant slave traders on the African coast in the 18th century. The Matoso family continued the slave trade on this property until 1836 when the export of slaves was prohibited by Maria II of Portugal.The museum displays a collection of artifacts, documents, and exhibits that highlight Angola's history of slavery. These include shackles, tools, and other items related to the slave trade, offering visitors insights into the harsh realities faced by enslaved individuals. The museum also provides historical context and narratives about the transatlantic slave trade in Angola through educational displays and presentations.
