Cameia National Park: Angola's Untamed Wilderness

Cameia National Park, situated in the Moxico province of eastern Angola, offers a unique glimpse into the country's diverse ecosystems. Established in 1935 as a hunting reserve and declared a national park in 1957, it spans approximately 14,450 square kilometers. The park's landscape is characterized by a mix of seasonally inundated plains, miombo woodlands, and open savannas, creating a rich tapestry of habitats.The park lies within the Zambezi River basin, with the Chifumage, Lumege, and Luena rivers defining its boundaries. These waterways, along with lakes Cameia and Dilolo (the largest lake in Angola, located just outside the park), support a variety of aquatic life and attract numerous waterbird species. Birdwatchers can spot at least 29 species of waterbirds, including the Angola lark and black-tailed cisticola.While Cameia National Park was once teeming with wildlife, the Angolan Civil War significantly impacted its animal populations. Poaching and infrastructure destruction led to a decline in large herbivores and predators. However, ongoing conservation efforts are gradually replenishing species such as reedbuck, wildebeest, and Lechwe antelopes. Though sightings of lions and leopards are now rare, the park remains a refuge for several endangered species.Visitors to Cameia National Park can explore its vast landscapes through game drives and hiking trails. The best time to visit for wildlife viewing is during the cooler, drier months between June and September.
