Discover more about Elias-Rodriguez House

Nestled in the heart of Tempe, Arizona, the Elias-Rodriguez House offers a captivating journey into the late 19th century. Constructed around 1882, the house is one of the earliest remaining adobe residences in the area, originally built by Vincent Elias, a farm laborer from Tucson, for his family. The house is located in what was known as the Sotelo Addition, a haven for Mexican American settlers. The Elias-Rodriguez House is a single-story adobe building that reflects Sonoran architectural influences. In 1912, a steeply pitched, hipped roof was added over the original flat dirt roof, along with a hipped-roof front porch. Subsequent modifications included replacing the windows and adding a bay window. The house is covered in stucco and features concrete patching, while the roof is made of rolled roofing. The City of Tempe purchased the Elias-Rodriguez House and is currently working to rehabilitate it. The vision is to create an interpretive museum that highlights the everyday lives of Mexican American families in historic Tempe.
