Discover more about Railroad Tunnel

Venture into the Tonto National Forest near Payson, Arizona, and uncover the intriguing Railroad Tunnel, a relic from the late 1800s. This incomplete tunnel marks the ambitious yet ultimately failed attempt by businessman James W. Eddy to connect Arizona's northern and southern railroad networks. Eddy's vision was to transport mining and lumber goods across the Mogollon Rim, a formidable geographical feature. Work on the tunnel began in 1883, with crews blasting through the rock of the Mogollon Rim. However, financial difficulties plagued the project, leading to its abandonment in 1888 with only 70 feet of the planned 3,100-foot tunnel completed. Today, hikers can explore this silent monument to a bygone era. The hike to the Railroad Tunnel offers several scenic options, including routes along the Arizona Trail and Colonel Devin Trail. The trails wind through diverse landscapes, from forests along the East Verde River to steeper, rocky inclines leading directly to the tunnel. Along the way, discover remnants of the past, such as an old stone structure that once served as a powder house for storing explosives. The tunnel entrance provides stunning views and a cool respite, while the tunnel itself offers a glimpse into the ambitious engineering of the 19th century.
