Discover more about Tempe City Hall

Tempe City Hall, located at 31 E 5th St, is an architectural landmark that houses the city's municipal offices. Completed in 1971, the inverted pyramid design, conceived by architects Michael and Kemper Goodwin, is a striking example of Mid-Century Modern style. The building's unique shape isn't just for show; it's an energy-efficient design that shades the exterior glass, reducing heat gain. The structure stands on the site of the original 1914 City Hall and was a catalyst for the revitalization of downtown Tempe. The interior is just as intriguing, with a small reception area on the ground floor that expands on the upper levels. The council chambers are located in a semi-buried basement, and the building is flanked by free-standing fire stair towers. Visitors can explore the outdoor areas with landscaping and gardens, providing a space for relaxation. Tempe City Hall is a protected building on the Tempe Historic Register and the National Register of Historic Places.
