Discover more about Watson Woods Riparian Preserve

Watson Woods Riparian Preserve, a 126-acre sanctuary a few miles northeast of downtown Prescott, protects one of the last remaining cottonwood-willow riparian habitats in the area. Once part of a 1,000-acre streamside forest, the preserve offers a vital refuge for both wildlife and humans. Managed by Prescott Creeks in partnership with the City of Prescott, the preserve has undergone significant restoration since its establishment in 1995. Efforts have focused on revitalizing the degraded habitat, which suffered from decades of grazing, illegal dumping, and gravel extraction. Today, visitors can explore a recovering ecosystem with a rich array of plant and animal life. The preserve features several miles of flat, accessible trails suitable for hiking, birdwatching, and photography. As you wander through the shaded paths, keep an eye out for green-backed herons, Mexican voles, and various reptile species. The area is particularly known for its birdlife, with species like Vermilion Flycatchers, Yellow Warblers, and Great Blue Herons frequently spotted. Interpretive signs provide insights into the ecology and importance of riparian habitats. Whether you're seeking a peaceful stroll, a chance to connect with nature, or an educational experience, Watson Woods Riparian Preserve offers a refreshing escape in the heart of Prescott.
