Getting There

• Car

  From the Phoenix area, take the AZ-202 S freeway toward the southeast. Merge onto the US-60 E and continue until you reach the junction with AZ-87 N. Take AZ-87 N toward Payson. After approximately 20 miles, turn left onto FR 143 (also known as Saguaro Del Norte Road). Follow this road for about 3 miles until you reach the Saguaro Del Norte Recreation Site entrance. There are no fees to enter the site, but remember to bring any necessary supplies as amenities are limited.

• Public Transportation

  If you are using public transportation, first take a Valley Metro bus to the nearest stop in Scottsdale, AZ. From there, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to get to the Saguaro Del Norte Recreation Site, as public transport does not extend directly to the site. Make sure to check the costs for the taxi or rideshare to avoid any surprises.

• Biking

  For those interested in biking, you can start from Fort McDowell. Head northwest on AZ-87 N, then turn onto FR 143. The bike ride will take you through scenic areas of Tonto National Forest, but be prepared for a challenging ride on unpaved roads. Ensure your bike is in good condition and carry plenty of water and snacks, as there are no services along the way.

• Walking

  If you're already within a reasonable distance in Tonto National Forest, you can hike to Saguaro Del Norte Recreation Site. Ensure you have a detailed map of the area, as trails can be unmarked. It is recommended to start early in the morning to avoid the heat, and remember to carry water and snacks as well as proper hiking gear.
