Getting There

  • Driving

    From Yellville, Arkansas, travel south on Highway 14 for approximately 13 miles to the intersection with Highway 268. Turn left onto Highway 268 and continue for 3 miles. The Buffalo Point Visitor Contact Station will be on your right. The trailhead parking lot is a quarter of a mile past the station on the right side of the road. The trail begins across the road from the parking lot.

    From the Buffalo Point Ranger Station, walk approximately 0.25 miles along Highway 268 to the trailhead parking lot on the right. The Indian Rockhouse Trailhead is located across the road from the parking area.

The trail leads to the highlight of the journey: the Indian Rockhouse, a large bluff shelter that provided refuge for prehistoric Native Americans as far back as 7,000 BC. Excavations in the 1930s revealed stone tools, basketry, and food remains, offering a glimpse into the lives of these early inhabitants. The site has been protected since 1972, when it became part of the Buffalo National River. Along the trail, you'll also discover sculpted bedrock, Panther Creek, and a former quarry, each adding to the trail's unique charm. The "natural bathtub," a bowl-like depression in the stream's bedrock, is another point of interest. The trail's moderate to strenuous rating comes from its steep inclines and declines, with an elevation change of around 400 feet. Note that pets are not permitted on the Indian Rockhouse Trail.
