    From the Fort Smith National Historic Site, head northwest on Parker Avenue, then turn left onto N 3rd Street. Continue onto N 5th Street, and walk for approximately 0.4 miles. The Belle Grove Historic District will be on your left, between N 5th and N 9th Streets. No cost.

The Belle Grove Historic District, located northwest of downtown Fort Smith, Arkansas, is a treasure trove of architectural styles and a testament to the city's rich history. Established as a historic district in 1974, it stands as the oldest residential neighborhood in Fort Smith and the first of its kind in Arkansas. Stroll through the 22-block district and admire the diverse architectural styles, including Gothic Revival, Victorian Renaissance, Victorian Baroque, Queen Anne, and Eastlake Victorian. Many prominent figures from Fort Smith's past called this neighborhood home, including political leaders, merchants, attorneys, and Judge Isaac C. Parker, the famous "hanging judge". William H.H. Clayton, a U.S. District Attorney, also resided here. Several landmarks contribute to the district's charm. The Clayton House, a Queen Anne/Italianate mansion, offers tours showcasing its black walnut staircase and original furniture. The Bonneville House, an Italianate-style home, was once owned by the widow of General Benjamin Bonneville, a renowned explorer. The Belle Grove School, an Italianate/Romanesque Revival building, served as one of Fort Smith's first public schools. Today, the Belle Grove Historic District invites visitors to explore its quiet, tree-lined streets and immerse themselves in the elegance of a bygone era.
