Discover more about Clayton House

The Clayton House, located in Fort Smith's Belle Grove Historic District, is a captivating journey into the Victorian era. Built in 1852 as the Sutton Mansion, it gained prominence when William Henry Harrison Clayton, the chief prosecutor in Judge Isaac Parker's renowned court, purchased and remodeled it in 1882. Clayton transformed the house into an Italianate-style masterpiece, reflecting his status and the elegance of the time. Serving as the Clayton family's residence until 1897, the house witnessed many prominent guests and significant events. Before Clayton's ownership, the house served as a Union hospital during the Civil War. Saved from demolition in 1969, the Clayton House underwent extensive restoration and opened as a museum in 1977. Today, visitors can explore the authentically restored rooms, filled with period furnishings, and learn about the Clayton family, Judge Parker's court, and the challenges of bringing law and order to the frontier. The house also features reconstructed servants' quarters and a kitchen, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who worked there. The grounds, including a Victorian gazebo and herb garden, provide a beautiful setting for weddings and events.
