Discover more about Red Canyon Slot (Peekaboo Kanab)

Red Canyon Slot, often called Peekaboo Canyon, is a breathtaking natural wonder located just outside Kanab, Utah. This hidden gem captivates adventurers and nature lovers with its towering, swirling, orange-hued Navajo sandstone walls. Sculpted over millennia by the forces of wind and water, the narrow passageways, some only shoulder-width apart, create an intimate atmosphere, allowing visitors to feel truly immersed in the grandeur of nature. The canyon's uniqueness lies in its serpentine curves and vividly colored rock layers, which cast a mesmerizing play of light and shadow. Inside the canyon, you can find ancient Moqui steps climbing the canyon walls, as well as logs balanced between the walls above you. These steps were carved by Ancestral Puebloans, also known as Anasazi, who inhabited the region from around AD 100 to AD 1600. They used the canyon to store grain, leaving behind evidence of their presence in the form of these steps etched into the sandstone. Besides its geological allure, Peekaboo Canyon has an intriguing history; it was once a favorite hideout of infamous Old West outlaws. Today, it offers a serene escape with echoes of the past. The canyon is relatively short, about 0.7 miles round trip, but very deep and well-sculpted. However, recent flash floods have altered the canyon, creating drop-offs that may pose challenges for some visitors. Despite these changes, the natural beauty and historical significance make Red Canyon Slot a stand-out destination in the region, providing compelling reasons for any traveler to visit.
