Getting There

  • Driving

    From Mt. Carmel Junction, head south on US-89 for approximately 0.5 miles. Look for a dirt road on the west side of the highway, indicated by a 'Dead End' sign between two guardrails. Turn onto this road and proceed for about 0.3 miles to the parking area on your left. The Belly of the Dragon trailhead will be visible from the parking area. There are no parking fees.

    From the parking area, walk towards the tunnel entrance. The entrance requires a short, 4-5 foot scramble down into the drainage canal. Natural handholds in the rock make the descent manageable. Once down, you're at the entrance to the Belly of the Dragon.

The Belly of the Dragon, located just outside Mt. Carmel Junction, Utah, offers a short but fascinating adventure into a man-made tunnel transformed by nature. This unique site began as a drainage tunnel beneath Highway 89. Over time, water flow has carved the sandstone walls into rippling patterns, creating a picturesque, cave-like environment that resembles the inside of a dragon's belly. The tunnel is easily accessible and requires minimal hiking. The total round trip is only about 0.5 miles. The most challenging part is a 4-5 foot scramble down into the tunnel entrance. Once inside, the tunnel stretches almost 100 yards, with light filtering in from both ends. The uneven floor and semi-darkness add to the adventurous feel, though most visitors find a flashlight helpful but not essential. While exploring, be aware of the numerous carvings on the walls. Please respect the site by not adding to the graffiti and practicing Leave No Trace principles. The best time to visit is between March and October, avoiding rainy conditions due to the risk of flash flooding.
