Discover more about Orbelian Caravanserai

Orbelian's Caravanserai, also known as Selim Caravanserai, stands as a testament to Armenia's pivotal role in the ancient Silk Road. Constructed in 1332 by Prince Chesar Orbelian and his brothers, this roadside inn provided respite for weary travelers and their animals crossing the mountainous Vayots Dzor region via the Vardenyats Mountain Pass. Built from basalt blocks, the caravanserai features a rectangular layout with a single hall divided into three naves. Seven pairs of polyhedral pillars support the vaults, while oculi in the roof allow sunlight and fresh air to filter in. The interior was designed to accommodate both humans and animals, with separate areas for travelers and stone troughs for feeding the animals. Reliefs of a winged creature and a bull adorn the entrance, adding to the site's historical charm. Located at an elevation of 2,410 meters (7,910 feet), Orbelian's Caravanserai offered a crucial sanctuary along a sometimes dangerous trade route. After falling into disuse and disrepair, the caravanserai underwent restoration in the 1950s, solidifying its place as the best-preserved caravanserai in Armenia. Today, visitors can explore this unique monument and imagine the bustling scene of merchants, animals, and cultural exchange that once filled its halls.
