Discover more about Orbelian Caravanserai

Perched at 2,410 meters above sea level in the Vardenis Mountains, Orbelian's Caravanserai is a captivating reminder of Armenia's pivotal role on the Silk Road. Constructed in 1332 by Prince Chesar Orbelian and his brothers, this medieval inn provided shelter and safety for merchants, travelers, and their animals navigating the treacherous mountain passes. The caravanserai's architecture is a unique example of medieval Armenian civil design. Built from basalt blocks, the structure features a rectangular layout with a vestibule leading into a large hall. The hall is divided into three naves by seven pairs of polyhedral pillars, with stone troughs between the pillars for animals to feed. Oculi in the vaulted ceilings provided light and ventilation. The southern wall and entrance of the vestibule showcase intricate ornamentation, including reliefs of a winged creature and a bull. Imagine the scene centuries ago: caravans laden with goods from the East and West seeking refuge within these walls. The air filled with the sounds of different languages, the bartering of goods, and the comforting presence of a safe haven. Orbelian's Caravanserai was not just a place to rest; it was a melting pot of cultures, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and traditions. Restored in the mid-20th century, Orbelian's Caravanserai stands as Armenia's best-preserved caravanserai, offering visitors a tangible link to the past. Explore the grounds, admire the panoramic views of the surrounding valley, and envision the lives of those who once sought shelter within these historic walls.
