Discover more about Garni Historical and Cultural Museum

Nestled in the picturesque Kotayk Province, 28 km east of Yerevan, the Garni Historical and Cultural Museum invites visitors to explore Armenia's rich heritage. The museum's centerpiece is the Garni Fortress, dating back to the 3rd-2nd centuries BC. Within the fortress walls stands the Garni Temple, a Greco-Roman style building erected in the 1st century AD by King Tiridates I to honor Mihr, the ancient Pagan God of Sun. It is the only surviving pagan temple in Armenia. After Armenia adopted Christianity in 301 AD, the temple miraculously survived the purge of pagan sites. It stood for centuries until an earthquake destroyed it in 1679. The temple was reconstructed in 1966 to its present glory. The museum complex also includes the remnants of a Roman bathhouse with a mosaic floor and palatial buildings, offering insights into various periods of Armenian history. The museum's exhibits detail the evolution of Armenian culture, displaying ancient artifacts, traditional crafts, and historical documents. Visitors can explore the castle, pagan temple, mosaic floor, bathhouse, and palatial buildings. The site is known for its stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the Azat River gorge. In the evenings, the temple is illuminated with colored lights and music, creating a magical atmosphere.
