Discover more about Orbelian Caravanserai

Perched at an elevation of 2,410 meters (7,910 feet) on the southern side of the Vardenyats Mountain Pass, Orbelian's Caravanserai is Armenia's best-preserved example of a medieval travelers' inn. Constructed in 1332 by Prince Chesar Orbelian and his brothers, this basalt structure offered respite to merchants, travelers, and their animals navigating the challenging Silk Road routes between Europe and the East. The caravanserai's architecture is a testament to its function and the environment. The single hall is divided into three naves by seven pairs of polyhedral pillars. Animals rested in the narrow aisles, with stone troughs between the pillars providing food and water. Travelers found rest in separate rooms. Three parallel vaults with oculi provided light and ventilation to the interior. The entrance vestibule features a gabled stone shingle roof and is adorned with carvings of winged creatures and bulls, offering a rare glimpse of ornamentation within the structure. For centuries, Orbelian's Caravanserai served as a vital stopover, facilitating the exchange of goods and ideas between diverse cultures. Abandoned and left in ruins for a period, it underwent a full restoration in the 1950s, ensuring its preservation as an invaluable link to caravanserai history. Today, visitors can explore this unique monument, imagining the bustling scene of traders and travelers seeking shelter within its walls.
