Discover more about Smbataberd

Rising from a narrow, rocky ridge in the Vayots Dzor province, Smbataberd, meaning "Fortress of Smbat," is a stunning example of medieval Armenian fortification. Located near the villages of Artabuynk and Yeghegis, the fortress dates back to at least the 5th century, with significant construction and expansion occurring between the 9th and 13th centuries. Strategically positioned, Smbataberd is surrounded on three sides by steep gorges, making it a formidable defensive site. The fortress is accessible primarily from the north, where its basalt walls, some 2-3 meters thick, have been remarkably preserved. Within the walls, remnants of barracks, cisterns, and divided acropolises reveal the sophisticated planning that went into this military bastion. Smbataberd served as the primary military stronghold for the town of Yeghegis and the surrounding area. It played a vital role in defending against invasions, particularly during the Seljuk period. Legend has it that the fortress withstood numerous sieges, succumbing only once when invaders discovered and cut off its water supply. The fortress is linked to both Prince Smbat of Syunik in the 10th century and the Orbelian dynasty. Some believe it was named in honor of Smbat Orbelian, whose grave lies in nearby Yeghegis. Today, Smbataberd attracts tourists, hikers, and history enthusiasts. The site offers panoramic views of the Vayots Dzor mountains and the Yeghegis Gorge. Visitors can explore the well-preserved walls and imagine life within this once-impregnable fortress.
