Discover more about California Lighthouse

Perched on the Hudishibana limestone plateau near Arashi Beach, the California Lighthouse is a striking landmark on Aruba's northwestern coast. Standing approximately 98 feet tall, it's the island's tallest structure, offering unparalleled 360-degree views of the azure Caribbean waters, rugged coastline, and the nearby Sasariwichi dunes. Named in memory of the British steamship S.S. California that sank off the coast in 1891, the lighthouse was constructed between 1914 and 1916 to prevent similar tragedies. Designed by French architect Leon Jean Marie Bourgeois, its architecture evokes the elegance of the era, reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower. The lighthouse played a crucial role in guiding ships through Aruba's treacherous waters until it was automated in 1970. Today, the California Lighthouse is a beloved historical and cultural landmark. Visitors can climb the 123 steps of the spiral staircase to reach the top, where they are rewarded with breathtaking views. The surrounding area offers opportunities to explore Aruba's natural beauty, with nearby attractions like Arashi Beach and Boca Catalina offering pristine sands and clear waters for swimming and snorkeling. For a unique experience, consider visiting at sunset to witness the sky ablaze with color as the sun dips into the Caribbean Sea. Or, enjoy a romantic dinner at the top of the lighthouse, offered by Experitours, for an unforgettable evening under the stars.
