Everglades House & Gardens, located in Leura, New South Wales, is a testament to the vision of Belgian businessman Henri Van de Velde and the talent of Danish landscape designer Paul Sorensen. In the 1930s, Van de Velde commissioned Sorensen to transform a steeply sloping orchard into a spectacular garden, resulting in what is now considered Australia's most significant inter-war period garden. The 13-acre estate seamlessly blends European Romanticism, 1930s Modernism, and the rugged beauty of the Australian bush. Visitors can explore formal European-style terraces, winding paths, and serene reflection pools. The gardens feature a diverse collection of plants, including cherry blossoms, Japanese maple trees, and tulips, creating a vibrant display of color throughout the seasons. The Art Deco house, influenced by Sorensen's architectural design, adds to the property's unique charm. Inside, visitors can admire the art gallery and learn about the history of the house and gardens. The property also offers amenities such as a gift shop, tea rooms, and picnic spots, making it an ideal destination for a relaxing day trip. From the gardens, sweeping views of the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains and the Jamison Valley can be enjoyed.
