Discover more about Tallow Beach

Tallow Beach, a captivating 3.2-kilometer coastal expanse, resides within the eastern precinct of Arakwal National Park, just a short distance from the heart of Byron Bay. This unpatrolled beach extends from Cosy Corner to Suffolk Park, offering a tranquil escape from the bustling town center. The beach's name has a unique origin, dating back to 1864 when the schooner Volunteer was wrecked off Cape Byron. Its cargo of tallow (rendered beef and mutton fat) washed ashore, giving the beach its distinctive name. Today, Tallow Beach is a sanctuary for nature enthusiasts. Avid birdwatchers can spot ospreys, white-bellied sea eagles, and pied oystercatchers along the shore. During winter and spring, the beach becomes an ideal vantage point for whale watching as humpbacks migrate between the Great Barrier Reef and Antarctica. Surfers frequent Tallow Beach, seeking both right and left-hand waves, although strong rip currents necessitate caution. Cosy Corner, nestled at the northern end, provides a sheltered spot when northerly winds blow. Beach fishing is another popular activity. Behind the dunes, paperbark trees offer shelter for native fauna, while Tallow and Ti-tree Creeks meander across the sand, adding to the area's natural charm.
