Discover more about Mangrove mountain dam

Nestled in Kulnura, New South Wales, Mangrove Creek Dam is more than just a water source; it's a scenic attraction offering a blend of natural beauty and educational insights. Constructed between 1978 and 1982, the dam serves as the primary reservoir for the Central Coast, supplying approximately 93% of the water to its residents. The dam itself is an impressive feat of engineering, with a storage capacity of 190,000 megalitres. The surrounding area boasts a catchment area of 101 square kilometers, contributing to the dam's vital role in the region's water supply. Visitors can explore the Mangrove Creek Dam Visitor Centre, which opened in September 2023, featuring interactive exhibits about the dam's history, the Central Coast water supply system, and the surrounding environment. The center is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, except on Christmas Day. The site may also be closed during periods of extreme fire danger. Beyond the visitor center, the dam offers picnic areas, a children's play space, and viewing platforms with panoramic views. It's a great place to relax and appreciate the natural surroundings. The area is part of McPherson State Forest, offering opportunities for walks, cycling, and mountain biking. While visiting, take note of the dam's construction. It's made of rolled, soft sandstone and siltstone, with a concrete face covering a large area. An interesting fact is that an 11km tunnel was planned to link the dam with Boomerang Creek for water transfer, but the project was never completed. Whether you're interested in engineering, nature, or simply a peaceful day out, Mangrove Creek Dam offers something for everyone.
