East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation: A Historic Synagogue

The East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, also known as the Melbourne City Synagogue, holds a special place in the history of Melbourne's Jewish community. Established in 1857, the congregation initially met in a smaller building before moving to its current location on Albert Street, East Melbourne. The present synagogue, consecrated in 1877, is the oldest in Melbourne and the largest 19th-century synagogue in Victoria. The synagogue's architecture, designed by Crouch & Wilson, showcases a Renaissance Revival style. The facade, completed in 1883, features five bays divided by Tuscan and Corinthian pilasters, and is crowned with two dome-like mansard roofs flanking a central pediment. Inside, a gallery supported by cast iron columns surrounds the space on three sides, and the original bimah and Torah ark remain intact. The main ceiling is paneled, with ventilators marking the location of former gas lights. Today, the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation continues to serve as a vibrant center for Jewish life in the city. It offers a range of religious, cultural, and social activities, including Shabbat services, educational programs, and community events.
