The East Gippsland Historical Society Museum, located in Bairnsdale, is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the unique history of Bairnsdale and the surrounding East Gippsland region. Founded in 1964, the society has operated its museum at the MacArthur Street premises since 1972. The museum is housed in the historic former Bairnsdale College, which was built in 1892. The museum features seven main rooms with displays encompassing furniture, furnishings and artifacts from the past. Themes include music, kitchenalia, the World Wars, medical practices, fashion, and communication. The museum also has farm machinery, tools, and various buildings, including the Calegero log hut. The 'Calajero' Log Cabin was originally built around 1880 by John Caughey and was relocated to the museum site in 1989. The museum also features Australian Heritage roses in its gardens. The Society maintains a large collection of archival photographs and memorabilia. The resource center holds regional archives, including documents, photographs, newspapers and microfiche, which are available to researchers. The Society's collection consists of over 60,000 items ranging from lacework to agricultural machinery to photography.
