The primary access to Raymond Island is via the Raymond Island Ferry from Paynesville. The ferry operates frequently throughout the day. It is a short ride across McMillan Strait. Pedestrians and cyclists travel for free. For vehicles, the cost is around $13 AUD per car for a return trip. The ferry departs from the Paynesville Ferry Terminal, located at the end of the Esplanade in Paynesville.

Once on Raymond Island, the Gippsland Lakes Reserve and Koala Trail are easily accessible by foot from the ferry terminal. The walk to the start of the Koala Trail is approximately 500 meters along sealed roads. Follow the signs from the ferry terminal. There are no costs associated with walking the trail.
