Discover more about The Big Ned Kelly

The Big Ned Kelly statue is a towering tribute to one of Australia's most controversial historical figures. Located in the heart of Glenrowan, the site of Ned Kelly and his gang's final siege in 1880, the statue stands as a prominent landmark and a major tourist draw. The current statue, unveiled on April 14, 1992, is the third iteration of the Big Ned Kelly. Commissioned by Rod and Chris Gerret, it was designed by Kevin Thomas, a special effects technician from Sydney. The fiberglass figure weighs 1.5 tonnes and cost $12,000 to construct. Ned Kelly's story is deeply intertwined with Glenrowan. In June 1880, the Kelly Gang made their last stand against the Victorian police. The gang, clad in homemade armour, engaged in a fierce gunfight with the authorities at the Glenrowan Inn. Ultimately, the gang was defeated, with Ned Kelly captured and three of his members killed. This event solidified Glenrowan's place in Australian history and folklore. Today, Glenrowan embraces its Ned Kelly heritage, offering visitors a chance to delve into the legend through various attractions. Besides the Big Ned Kelly statue, tourists can explore the Ned Kelly Museum, the Glenrowan Tourist Centre, and the historic Siege Site Walk. The town provides a unique glimpse into a pivotal moment in Australian history, sparking conversations about bushrangers, law and order, and the making of a folk hero.
