Getting There

  • Driving

    From the Bruny Island Ferry terminal at Roberts Point, drive south along Bruny Island Main Road for approximately 18.5 km. The car park for The Neck is well-signed as you approach the narrow strip of land between North and South Bruny Island. Parking is free, but spaces are limited, especially during peak hours. From the car park, head up the wooden steps on the north side to reach the boardwalk and lookout.

  • Public Transport

    To reach The Neck using public transport, take the SeaLink ferry from Kettering to Bruny Island. Passengers travel free, but there is a fee for vehicles. As of July 2025, a return ticket for a vehicle under 6 meters is approximately $53.20. The ferry trip takes about 15-20 minutes. Once on Bruny Island, there is no public transport. You would need to rely on pre-booked taxi or rideshare service to get to The Neck, which may be limited and expensive. Some tours offer transportation directly to The Neck as part of their itinerary.

The Neck Game Reserve Lookout is a must-visit destination on Bruny Island, Tasmania, offering breathtaking 360-degree views of the isthmus connecting North and South Bruny Island. From the lookout, visitors can see Adventure Bay, the D'Entrecasteaux Channel, and the distant Tasmanian mountains. The lookout is reached by climbing approximately 300 steps. The Neck is also an important habitat for native wildlife. Short-tailed shearwaters and little penguins (also known as fairy penguins) can be observed returning to their burrows in the sand dunes at dusk. The best viewing period is during the warmer months, from September to February. During peak viewing times, a Parks and Wildlife interpretation guide is present at dusk to offer advice and assistance. At the top of the lookout, there is a memorial to Truganini (1812-1876), an Aboriginal woman, and to the Nuenonne people who inhabited Bruny Island before European settlement. Truganini was the daughter of the chief of the Bruny Island people and worked to unite the Indigenous communities of Tasmania. Camping is available at the southern end of the Neck game reserve.
