Discover more about Historischer Zunftbaum

The Historischer Zunftbaum, or Historical Guild Tree, is a unique landmark in the heart of Kindberg, Austria. More than just a typical maypole, this elaborately decorated tree showcases the town's rich history and the importance of local trades. The tradition of erecting Maibäume (maypoles) with simple guild signs existed in Kindberg before the 1950s. However, the concept of the Kindberg Zunftbaum as it is known today was initiated by hotelier and tourism director Franz Gruber, inspired by similar traditions he observed in Bavaria. Gruber's vision involved a tree adorned with detailed figures representing various local guilds, a traditional couple, and a wedding procession, all crafted by Kindberg artist Hubert Pilch. Unlike traditional maypoles, this new landmark was intended to remain standing throughout the year. Over time, other artists contributed to the Zunftbaum's design, including Fritz Putz from Bruck an der Mur and Anton Babion from Schliersee, Bavaria. The decorations evolved to include not only guild symbols but also traditional costumes, fairytale characters, coats of arms, hearts, and lanterns. Local artists like Max Kroisleitner, Edith Schermer, Traude Geyeregger-Rothwangl, and Ria Urferer also contributed to the ongoing redesign and repainting of the decorations. The Zunftbaum has become a beloved symbol of Kindberg, representing its traditions and serving as a unique attraction for visitors.
