Schloss Eggenberg: A Baroque Universe in Graz

Schloss Eggenberg, located on the western edge of Graz, is more than just a palace; it's a meticulously designed representation of the universe. Constructed in the 17th century by Prince Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg, the palace incorporates the family's original medieval residence. It has 365 exterior windows, one for each day of the year, and the four towers are oriented to the cardinal directions, representing the four seasons. The 24 state rooms on the second floor symbolize the hours in a day, and each floor contains 31 rooms, representing the maximum number of days in a month. The cycle of 600 ceiling paintings in the state rooms depicts scenes from Greek and Roman mythology, religious stories, and European legends.The interior design reflects the tastes of the Rococo period, with the Planet Hall being a particular highlight. This hall showcases planets, elements, constellations, and zodiac signs, all meant to glorify the Eggenberg family. The palace also houses the Alte Galerie, displaying Austrian Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque art, as well as the Archaeology Museum and Coin Cabinet.The expansive gardens surrounding Schloss Eggenberg provide a tranquil escape. Designed in the English style, the park features a rose garden, romantic gardens, and a diverse tree population.
