Pfarrkirche St. Johann im Pongau: A Majestic Landmark

The Pfarrkirche zum hl. Johannes dem Täufer und Evangelisten, dedicated to St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, dominates the skyline of St. Johann im Pongau with its striking presence. Often referred to as the 'Pongauer Dom' due to its cathedral-like scale, this church holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike. Originally, a Romanesque church was erected on this site in the 13th century. However, the current Baroque church was constructed between 1783 and 1788, designed by the master builder Joseph Abenthung. The driving force behind the new church was the local priest Franz Xaver Wierer. The church was consecrated in 1788 by Prince-Bishop Joseph von Spaur. The church's architecture is characterized by a synthesis of Baroque and Neogothic elements. The elegant church tower, standing at 63 meters, houses seven bells. The interior features a nave and two aisles, with a single-aisle choir. The statues of St. John the Baptist, St. John the Evangelist, and St. Joseph adorn the main facade.
