Discover more about Old City Hall

Salzburg's Old City Hall, or Altes Rathaus, stands as a testament to the city's rich history. Built in the 14th century, the building initially served as a burgher house before being purchased by the city council in 1407. For centuries, it was the seat of Salzburg's administration. The Old City Hall is known for its distinctive clock tower, which once regulated the residents' curfew times with its bells. The tower clock and trumpeters also served as timekeepers for the public, and the night watchman would sound the alarm in the event of fire or unrest. The figure of Justitia, added in 1616, reflects the building's former role as a courthouse. In 1947, the mayor and city council moved to Schloss Mirabell, and the Altes Rathaus transitioned to house a gallery and meeting rooms. Today, visitors can explore the Hall of Pillars, the City Gallery, and the Kulstrunk Panorama, which depicts Salzburg in 1916. The building's Rococo facade, added in 1772, adds to its architectural appeal.
