Discover more about Mozart's Birthplace

Mozart's Birthplace, or Mozarts Geburtshaus, stands as a testament to the life and legacy of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Located in the heart of Salzburg at Getreidegasse 9, this historic yellow townhouse is where the legendary composer was born on January 27, 1756. The building, originally called the Hagenauer House, was the Mozart family's residence for 26 years, from 1747 to 1773. Inside, the museum spans several floors, each dedicated to different aspects of Mozart's life and work. Visitors can view Mozart's childhood violin and clavichord, along with portraits, family letters, and early editions of his music. The second floor highlights Mozart's passion for opera, including the clavichord he used to compose "The Magic Flute". The first floor recreates living conditions in Mozart's time with period furniture. The museum also delves into the history of the house itself, which dates back to the 12th century. It was once part of a garden belonging to the Benedictine Monks of St Peter's. Over the centuries, it passed through various owners before the Hagenauer family acquired it in 1703. The International Mozarteum Foundation opened the museum in 1880, preserving Mozart's legacy for generations to come. A visit offers an intimate glimpse into the environment that nurtured one of history's most influential composers.
